8th Floor Unit Council Adopts Local 4th Grade Class
Dec 6, 2018 | St. Francis News
Community involvement is the cornerstone of the 8th Floor Unit Council’s mission and vision. So when this past school year started, the Council embarked on a journey that echoed this sentiment and a goal of the entire 8th-floor team. It adopted a classroom in an underserved community of Los Angeles. With donations collected from the staff, the Unit Council visited Hillcrest Drive Elementary School and presented 4th-grade teacher Deanna Brackett with the small token of a $350.00 gift card. Knowing that the school district had limited resources, the Unit Council hoped their donation would enable Mrs. Brackett to purchase much-needed school supplies.
The donation was humbly accepted, and Mrs. Brackett said, “I will purchase art and PE supplies, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities. In addition, I will buy a few learning games to help my students practice cooperation and team building.”
This is not the first time the 8th floor Unit Council adopted a classroom, and as with previous donations, they were pleased to hear that their gift will lighten the burden for educators who have had to purchase supplies out of pocket. They were very touched when Mrs. Brackett and her 27 students expressed with tear-filled gratitude that this would afford them the possibility of having a successful school year.
Jacqueline Smith DNP, RN, AGCNS-BC, CMSRN, 8th-floor Unit Council Chair, stated, “As a team, the 8th floor strives to aim for the stars, to make dreams come true, and to bring smiles to the faces of teachers and students in our community.”
We thank Jacqueline, Beverly Armstrong, BSN, RN, 8th-floor Director and Unit Council Sponsor, the 8th Floor Unit Council members, and the 8th-floor management team and staff for their care of our patients and service to our community.
